Beautiful Huahine

Huahine is known as the “Island of Women”. Discover the beauty of Huahine during our Women’s Tahitian Escape in 2022!

Huahine holds a special place in our hearts. Just five years ago, at the last minute, we were invited to sail from Bora Bora to Huahine. It was after our arrival, and after several days spent sailing and cruising the island’s breathtaking waters, that we were inspired to start Te Mana Travels! In our opinion, Huahine is the perfect combination of the finest attributes that French Polynesia is famous for. Lush, rich, green landscapes, high peaks, deep bays, mountain tops offering un-real panoramic views, and of course a drop dead gorgeous lagoon, full of every color of blue you can imagine.

Huahine is located just 20 miles east of Raiatea and Tahaa, and about 50 miles from Bora Bora. It is unique, as it is actually 2 islands, Huahine-Nui (Great Huahine), and Huahine-Iti (Little Huahine). These two islands are connected by a small bridge, which actually wasn’t built until the 1960’s.

Huahine is referred to as the “Island of Women”. From a distance, the island looks like the silhouette of a pregnant woman lying down, and also has a rich history of being governed by several strong queens. Huahine is also very well–known in French Polynesia for being one of the last islands to give up its’ independence to France. After years of fighting and resistance, France actually bombed the main village of Fare in 1846. It wasn’t until 1895, that Huahine was officially annexed by France. As peaceful and beautiful as this island is now, the pride and independence of this island’s local inhabitants is deeply rooted in history.

For our charter guests, we love that Huahine allows everyone to be as active or chilled out as a person wants to be. On land, the island provides for great hiking, biking, and has some of the most extensive marae (ancient Polynesian worship and ceremonial sites) to visit. By sea, we love the snorkeling , great beaches and beautiful waters. The main village of Fare also has a great vibe that we always look forward to experiencing.

Recently, we spent a few days on land here with one of our good buddies and traveling partners. We decided to rent scooters and drive around the entirety of Huahine. The day could not have been more stunning. The colors of the lagoon, the brilliant greens, the views completely took my breath away. As I drove my little scooter, I couldn’t stop thinking that this just might be what heaven looks like.
