Tahiti and her islands are two hours behind Pacific Standard Time (PST). During daylight saving time (April-October) they are three hours behind PST.
-
The currency is the French Pacific Franc (XPF). Most visitors exchange money at the airport, hotels or the local banks very easily. Most major credit cards are also accepted throughout the islands. We recommend alerting your bank and credit card companies about your dates of international travel prior to your departure. We also advise you to exchange money at your bank in the USA before you arrive in French Polynesia. This eliminates time wasted once you are in the islands!
-
French and Tahitian are the official languages. English is also spoken and understood in most tourist areas.
-
A wonderful tropical, ideal climate is part of what makes Tahiti and French Polynesia so spectacular. Average air and water temperatures are 80 degrees! The climate is slightly warmer and more humid during the summer months, November through April. A cooler, and slightly dryer climate is experienced in the winter months, May through October.
-
One of the best parts of Tahiti and French Polynesia is the casual island vibe. Comfortable, loose fitting fabrics made for being in the sun and outdoors is best. Swimsuits, shorts and casual shirts are perfect for the day. For dinner at most restaurants and resorts, sundresses for women and shorts and sport shirts for men are the norm. Sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats, bug-spray and reef-walking shoes are also must-haves. Click here to check out our recommended packing list.

No other shots or certifications are needed if traveling from North America.
-
The tap water is considered safe in most restaurants and hotels. Bottled water is also readily available.
-
Tipping is not obligatory in French Polynesia. However, tipping your local guides 10-20% of your excursions price for outstanding service you receive is much appreciated. Also, for yacht charters in the Islands of Tahiti a 10-20 % tip on total charter price is customary for exemplary service.
-
Most hotels and charter boats use 220 volt (European/French) outlets. You will need a converter/adapter from 110-220 volts. USB plugs for charging are also provided in most yacht cabins for smaller electronic devices such as tablets and cell phones.
-
The majority of resorts and hotels have complimentary WiFi for their guests. For our charter guests that would like to stay connected while onboard, we recommend easily renting a pocket router at Tahiti WiFi. They are located at the airport upon your arrival into the country.
-
We recommend that you consult with your mobile provider before traveling to French Polynesia. To dial from a USA number to a French Polynesian number you will need to dial 001 and then the country code 689 plus the local number.
